It wasn't a huge problem. I mean, I wasn't a blackout drunk, stumbling around and getting into all kinds of trouble. But, I could see that alcohol was becoming waayyy too important to me, so it was time to stop. There's a history of addiction in my family, so I knew I was playing with fire, so to speak.

It started out as one or two glasses of wine each weekend. But once my parents passed away and my family was in a turmoil, my drinking progressed to nearly every day. Then I went from wine to vodka, and things got even worse. I became depressed and irritable. I didn't have the zest for life that I used to have, and getting up each day was a chore instead of an adventure, as it once was.

Sure, I would quit for a few weeks, even months, or only drink on weekends for awhile, but in time, it would be almost a nightly thing again. And hey, I'm not getting any younger, so it's high time I started taking better care of myself!

So, it's been a few weeks now, and I have to say, I feel great! I've been going to A.A. meetings once a week and I started the 12-step program, but it hasn't taken over my life like I thought it would. I really thought going to the meetings would be sad and boring; that they would suck the life out of me. But, no, they aren't - we laugh a lot and everyone there is honest and open. It's really helped me see that I don't have to change my life alone and I have lots of help whenever I need it.

If you've quit drinking or doing drugs, I'd love to hear from you. I've found that having someone else to lean on when you have a problem is a good thing!

Congratulations, momoffour! I know so many people who I wish would do the same. And I'm glad that you got the support that you need. Why people feel bad about asking for help when they need it is beyond me.

Let me know how it's going when you get a chance, and I wish you the best!!

My grandma used to say, "alcohol is the devil," and I truly believe that she was right. Nothing good comes from drinking. Look at all the car accidents from people drinking and driving. It impairs your ability to think rationally and it's so bad for your health, too!!

I don't drink and never have, because I just don't like the taste of alcohol. When I go out with my friends, I see people acting stupid after a few drinks. I just don't understand why anyone would want to take a drink.

So, good for you!! You can come here and post anytime you need some support, momoffour! I'm glad you made such a wise decision, and I'm sure your family is, too.

I get that. I tried alcohol when I was a teen. All it did was make me feel tired and sick. I feel bad for people who are addicted to alcohol. I hate to see news stories involving drunk drivers. It is unbelievable how many of them are repeat offenders. You would think they would live and learn. So sad.
