They say everyone has different memories of certain events in their lives. Memories of details that will stay with them forever.
With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 looming, I am wondering what everyone else's memory was of that day. What details still hang with you after all this time?
I can tell you mine.
I was at work that day and I was also 6 weeks pregnant (a baby 6 weeks later we would lose). Oddly enough, there was a TV set up in the conference room at work. Odd, because there usually wasn’t one there. I remember hearing reports on the radio and we all raced to turn the TV on. The first thing I saw was the burning World Trade Center building. I watched and cried. If people think just because I live in Minnesota instead of NYC I wasn't affected....wrong. I was. I bawled my tail off.
In the days and weeks afterwards I remember one particular Fire Fighter. I believe he was a Captain, but I don't remember his name. But he appeared on camera several times talking about that day. I remember distinctly he kept apologizing. "I'm sorry. So sorry," he would always say. "I am so sorry we couldn't get more people out." My heart wept for this guy because I knew he was changed forever.
A couple of years later I had the amazing opportunity to see former Mayor Rudy Giuliani speak about the days after 9/11. The stories he told of the heroism and sacrifice of that day is something I am SO grateful I was able to hear first hand. Even if it was painful to hear.
So with all that being said...what is your memory of Sept 11, 2001?
